About this resource
Ready to print, adapt and use.
This three-page worksheet uses the Burren in Co. Clare as a case study of a karst landscape. Students label clints, grikes, a swallow hole, a cave and an underground river on a cutaway diagram, complete sentences explaining how rainwater and carbon dioxide dissolve limestone, and answer photo-based multiple-choice questions, including on Aillwee Cave.
Teaching notes
Teach the process of carbonation before students attempt the fill-the-gap section. Photographs of Poulnabrone and the limestone pavement near Fanore make useful starters, and the sheet works well as preparation for a Burren field trip.
