About this resource
Ready to print, adapt and use.
This two-page worksheet supports the Leaving Certificate Biology ecology unit using an Irish rocky shore. Students label the splash zone, upper, middle and lower shore, the tide lines and six organisms on a cross-section, match eight ecology terms to their definitions, and draw arrows to build a food web from plankton and seaweed up to the herring gull.
Teaching notes
Use before or after a shore field trip at a site such as Kilkee or Bull Island. The food web can be checked against students' own quadrat and transect data, and the vocabulary match doubles as revision for the habitat study questions.
Learning objectives
- Label the zones and organisms of a rocky shore.
- Define key ecology terms including niche, abiotic factor and zonation.
- Construct a food web for an Irish rocky shore.
