About this resource

Ready to print, adapt and use.

This worksheet takes students from reading prices and coins in a canteen picture through to working out change and explaining their thinking. It opens with a photo task matching coins to prices, then moves to money vocabulary, multiple-choice value questions, written calculations and two open questions.

Use it as supplied or edit the worksheet to match the prices at your own canteen. Every price is a multiple of five cents, so the amounts work with real Australian coins, and the final questions ask students to justify an answer rather than just calculate it.

Teaching notes

The canteen picture is the best starting point even if your class is confident with coins, because it gives students something concrete to point at before they work with numbers alone. Question 4 on that page ("how do you know the muesli bar coins are enough?") is the one worth discussing as a class; it moves students from counting to justifying.

The final page is where the thinking happens. The muffin question has several correct answers, so it works well as a paired task with students comparing the combinations they found. If your class needs extending, ask which combination uses the fewest coins.

Real coins or classroom money alongside the sheet will help any student who is still linking coin size to coin value, since the Australian 50c is physically the largest but the $1 and $2 are worth more.
