About this resource

Built for a clear, classroom-ready lesson.

This complete lesson takes students from what a life cycle is to sequencing and describing two full cycles: the green tree frog and the wanderer butterfly. Explanations are broken into short steps, followed by ordering and matching activities, a comparison of the two cycles, and a written response with a model answer.

Use the slideshow as supplied or edit the PowerPoint to match your class, your vocabulary and the time you have. Answer slides are included after each activity so you can review responses together, and the cut-and-stick circle task gives students something to do with the sequence themselves.

Teaching notes

The two cycles are taught one after the other, so you can stop after the green tree frog if you only have a short session and pick up the wanderer butterfly next lesson. Each activity is followed by its answer slide, so hide those if you want students to commit to an answer first.

The sentence stems on the model answer slide (first, next, then, finally) are worth keeping on display while students write. If your class has a local species they know well, swap it into the comparison slide in place of the butterfly. For an extension, the curriculum suggests drawing on the knowledge First Nations Australians hold about the life cycles and migration of local species, which sits naturally alongside the frog sequence.

Learning objectives
