This complete lesson takes students from naming the five angle types to measuring accurately in degrees. Acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex are introduced with worked examples, then estimating is taught as a check before measuring, followed by a four-step guide to placing and reading a protractor.
Use the slideshow as supplied or edit the PowerPoint to match the angles your class is working with. Common protractor errors are addressed directly, and answer slides follow each activity so you can review responses together before students measure independently.
Teaching notes
The estimating slide is worth spending time on. Students who compare an angle with a right angle first are far less likely to read 73° when the answer is 107°, and the lesson returns to that check after every measurement.
The "common protractor mistakes" slide names the three errors explicitly (centre off the vertex, arm not on zero, reading the wrong scale) so it works well as a display slide while students measure. The angle hunt uses a photo of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and asks which angles could only be estimated, which makes a good paired discussion before the written task. Swap in a photo of a local building if your class would recognise it.
